Learning from America's Hat

As the land of the free seems to continue its slide toward becoming the land of "free" health care, we thought we'd throw up a few videos to remind us that nationalized health care, socialized medicine, the public option, or whatever else you want to call it is a horrible idea.

As we all know, America's hat (also known as Canada) has dabbled in socialized medicine for quite some time now. Learning from your mistakes, or better yet, the mistakes of others is always a great idea. So in the spirit of learning from mistakes, here are a few videos to give you a taste of life as a sick Canadian:

First up is "The Lemon" by Stuart Browning of FreeMarketCure.com. Browning demonstrates how single-payer health care systems have a lot in common with the failed economic systems of Soviet-era eastern Europe.

Next up, The Fraser Institute, a Canadian public policy think tank, brings us Dr. Brian Gets Impatient With Waiting Lists. Dr. Brian Day is an Orthopaedic Surgeon and former head of the Canadian Medical Association. He speaks out on long wait lists and other problems with Canadian health care.

After hearing about wait times from Dr. Day, we thought another video by Stuart Browning highlighting wait times, medical care rationing, tumors, and brain surgery in Canada would be a natural follow up.

After watching a few experiences of Canadians, one can't help but think that the public option sounds great. Or not. Look, no one disagrees that health care in the United States needs to be reformed. The question is, do we want to embrace market-based reforms and more consumer freedom, or model ourselves after Canada and other socialized systems that are already proven failures?  You can make up your mind by learning more about our health care reform options in Intellectual Takeout's new section, Nationalized Health Care.
